Résumé Tips

The Recruiters Perspective:
The decision on whether you are identified as a good candidate for a particular job will initially be based on the quality of your Orapeople profile. Your on-line profile is what people will see - therefore it is important to get this right.
You will help maximize your chances of being shortlisted by following the guidelines below:

  1. First impressions count: Filling in an electronic form is no different from writing a paper based resume - sloppily filled in forms with missing information, unformatted text, proper names in lower case look shoddy and give the impression that you don't care. No matter how skilled or experienced you are it is difficult to overcome these first impressions. Check your spellings and punctuation carefully.
  2. Relevancy: Your profile should meet the requirements of the target organisation where possible. The most common complaint is that many Job Applicants have neither the appropriate skills nor relevant experience. Since this is an Oracle only site it is wise to limit the non-Oracle experience and skills to essentials. Where information clearly demonstrates your suitability for a vacancy, and enhances your chances of being short-listed, include this information in the Experience Summary.
  3. Accuracy: Your Profile should be honest and factual. Lying never pays dividends.
  4. Summary: Your Profile must highlight your achievements and how they relate to the jobs you are applying for. The Experience Summary should give the reader a clear indication of why you should be considered for this role. Achievements should be short, bullet-pointed statements and include your role, the action you took and a comment on the result of your action.
  5. Brevity: Your paper resume should contain no more than 3 or 4 pages. Leave out information that is irrelevant or negative. There is no need to include a full life history so keep school, university, hobbies, holiday jobs etc to a minimum. Your resume should be a brief, positive overview of your experience and best qualities.
  6. Clarity: A nicely formatted resume helps the reader to scan the document. The OraPeople profile format makes use of bold headings and color whilst retaining a simple look and feel. Long text boxes such as the Employment History should always be, logical, easy to read format using bullet points or hyphens with sufficient white space between periods of employment. Make sure all breaks in the text are at a suitable place. Avoid splitting sections if you can.
  7. Contactability: It is essential that sufficient personal details are given for a recruiter or potential employer to contact you easily.
